How to Perform Self Reiki: A Guide to Healing Yourself
Welcome to Soul Energy Reiki! Yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful client who was surprised to learn that Reiki isn’t just for sessions with a practitioner—it can be performed on oneself too. This inspired me to share a comprehensive guide on how you can practice self Reiki to promote your own healing and well-being.
What is Self Reiki?
Self Reiki is the practice of using Reiki techniques on oneself to balance energy, reduce stress, and promote healing. Just like a regular Reiki session, self Reiki involves channeling universal life force energy to areas of your body that need attention. It’s a powerful tool that can be used anywhere and anytime to enhance your physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Benefits of Self Reiki
- Reduces Stress: Promotes relaxation and helps manage stress.
- Enhances Well-being: Balances energy levels and enhances overall health.
- Emotional Healing: Helps process and release emotional blockages.
- Self-awareness: Encourages mindfulness and self-awareness.
- Empowerment: Empowers you to take an active role in your healing process.
How to Perform Self Reiki
Step 1: Set Your Intention
Before beginning, take a moment to set a clear intention for your self Reiki session. Your intention could be to reduce stress, heal a specific area, or simply to relax. Setting an intention helps focus the energy and make your session more effective.
Step 2: Find a Quiet Space
Choose a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. This can be a dedicated meditation area, a quiet corner of your home, or even your bed. Ensure the space is clean, serene, and free from distractions.
Step 3: Ground Yourself
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet, anchoring you to the earth. This grounding exercise helps you connect with the earth’s energy and prepares you for the Reiki session.
Step 4: Activate Reiki Energy
Place your hands in a prayer position at your heart centre. Take a few moments to connect with the Reiki energy. You can do this by visualising a bright, white light entering your body through the crown of your head, filling you with healing energy. If you’ve been attuned to Reiki, you can also use the symbols taught during your training to activate the energy.
Step 5: Hand Positions
Now, begin the self Reiki process by placing your hands on various parts of your body. Hold each position for 2-5 minutes or as long as feels right. Here are the 13 suggested hand positions.

Head Positions
- Cover the eyes: Approximately cover your eyes with the palms of your hands.
- Cover the ears: Approximately cover your ears with the palms of your hands.
- Back of the head: Place your hands on the back of your head, either one on top of the other or side by side.
Front of the Body
- Neck: Place your hands on each side of your neck.
- Chest: Place one hand on the chest, above the breasts, and the other just above it, towards the neck.
- Solar plexus: Place your hands under the breasts, in the solar plexus area.
- Stomach: Place your hands on the abdomen, over the stomach.
- Below waist/Ovaries: Place your hands in a V shape, fingers touching or almost touching, below the waist (for men) or over the ovaries (for women).
Back of the Body
- Shoulders: Place your hands on your shoulders, fingers bent over, pointing towards the shoulder blades.
- Waist: Place your hands on your waist, on the back, palms placed on each side of the spine at a comfortable distance.
- Hips: Place your hands on your hips on the back of your body.
Legs and Feet
- Knees: Place your hands over your knees.
- Feet: Cup each foot with your hands.
Feel free to adjust these positions based on your needs and intuition.
Step 6: Close the Session
Once you have covered all the areas, return your hands to a prayer position at your heart centre. Take a few deep breaths and thank yourself for the healing session. You can also thank the Reiki energy for its assistance. Take a moment to notice how you feel and any changes in your body or mind.
Tips for a Successful Self Reiki Practice
- Regular Practice: Consistency is key. Try to incorporate self Reiki into your daily routine.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after your session to help flush out toxins.
- Be Patient: Healing takes time. Be patient with yourself and trust the process.
- Listen to Your Body: Let your intuition guide you. Your body knows what it needs.
Conclusion
Self Reiki is a wonderful way to take charge of your own healing journey. With regular practice, you’ll find that it becomes a natural part of your self-care routine, helping you to maintain balance and harmony in your life.
