Lesson 3: Heart Practice and Expanding Consciousness

The union of male and female energies is what makes the world go round, literally and figuratively. Feminine and masculine, yin and yang, night and day – opposites, yet integral parts of each other. The male aspect is form; it is everything we see and touch in the visible world. The female aspect is the movement that animates form. Together, they intertwine, both aspects requiring each other in order to become whole. Magnetically drawn to one another, they merge to become life as we know it in human form.

In other words, beginning from nothing (energy/female) comes everything (form/male). Consciousness itself starts in the void, and then physically manifests; life opens, unfurls, blooms, and then slowly dissipates, as it moves back into the void of all possibilities.

Our own thoughts move in this same way – our desire for something begins with a dream, a vision, an idea, a spark of consciousness. This begins the creation process of physically manifesting in the world. Each thought has a lifespan of its own (whether a second, a minute, or several decades) before it dissolves back into nothingness.

At the subtlest levels, masculine energy is infinite consciousness and ever-present awareness, while feminine energy is inextinguishable radiance and light, both expressions of the profound Love that has woven this whole dream into being.

At every phase of life – from creation, to fulfilment, to dissolution – consciousness is the floor upon which the dance of feminine and masculine energies, the dance of yin and yang takes place. No matter how we look at this polarity of masculine and feminine, whether viewing the most earthly aspects or the most spiritually subtle layers, what is clear is that both energies are essential to the whole.

To know, understand, and embody this state of wholeness is perhaps that state of nirvana that many of us spend a lifetime in search of – looking for the man, woman, child, teacher, home, profession, or sense of purpose that will make us whole again. In truth, the wholeness we seek is already rooted inside us.

Look Within

“If you look to others for fulfilment, you will never truly be fulfilled. If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with yourself. Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.”

– Lao Tzu

The vast majority of us are conditioned to look to the external world to know and understand what life is all about. We learn to base our perceptions on what we see, hear, taste, touch, and experience in the outer world. We even learn to determine what we feel, what we want, and what we believe based on outer circumstances.

The world we live in encourages us to look outside ourselves for love, happiness, safety, peace, and fulfilment. Wanting us to believe that the more we have – money, material things, friends, approval, popularity, success, etc, the happier we will be and the better our lives will get.

As spiritual beings that are intrinsically designed to seek harmony with the feminine and masculine energies within ourselves, when we look to the outer world, it’s understandable that we get confused. The play of these sacred opposites hasn’t been very playful, historically speaking. For eons, we have struggled to accept the aspects of ourselves and each other that we are most estranged from.

Basically, this orientation to separation leaves us living life along a spectrum from low-grade dissatisfaction to high-pitched suffering.

The great spiritual traditions have long recognised the importance of turning our attention inward in order to unravel our misperceptions. By tuning into ourselves for insights and answers, especially tuning into the profound intelligence of our physical bodies, our intuitive bodies, and our hearts, we begin to establish a new point of reference. This reference point is our core self – the self that is already and always whole.

The Healthy Divine Feminine offers tenderness, wisdom, patience, nurturing, flexibility and fertility.  Feminine intuition is one of our most powerful tools for guidance, and we all have it.  “She” leads us in the right direction every time.  Who couldn’t benefit from some sound reliable advice in life? When something needs attention or is out of balance, she communicates through the body, the emotions and our thoughts.  When we are not listening or heeding her warnings, the voice gets louder and our discomfort grows.  Out of balance and ignored, she loses self-respect, discernment and the ability to love herself.

Could you improve your listening skills to honour this aspect of yourself?

“Her” nature is to love you, guide you, honour you and nurture you.

Can you allow this in?  Where can you be more loving, honouring and nurturing to yourself?

She is creative and playful and loves to be in nature.  Your Divine Feminine is also the midwife to all that you are here to birth – ideas, businesses, children, art, books, products and all you can create.  She supports the whole process of seed planting, germination, incubation, nourishment and harvesting.  Everyone is here to birth something!

If you work together, your Divine Feminine will help you connect with your Divine seed and guide you and the seed through the birthing process with ease and grace. In connecting with this wise and caring aspect of yourself, you will feel more peaceful, nourished, fulfilled and supported.

The Healthy Divine Masculine is fearless, courageous and loyal.  “He” is our guardian protector.  When in balance, the masculine protector does no harm.  His gentle strength brings harmony and peace to where there was conflict and separation.  He knows his power but does not abuse or misuse it.

Are you using your power (words, actions, dollars and resources) in ways that unite or separate, create or destroy?

He is a leader and is not afraid to speak the truth even if others disagree.  He is courageously fierce in standing for what is right.

What do you stand for?  Are your choices in life reflecting this?

The Divine Masculine is not afraid of the unknown.  He enjoys adventure and exploring new territory.  He believes in himself and knows he will succeed if his intentions are clear and actions aligned.  The unhealthy masculine is stagnant, stifled, afraid to fail or an overpowering bully.  When you heal those parts of “him” that are hurt, stifled or misunderstood and you team Him with the love and wisdom of the Divine Feminine, the combination is pure perfection.

When working in harmony, the Sacred Union of the Divine Feminine and Masculine can unite, heal and create ANYTHING!!!  The synergy created by this balanced union catalyses the forces of creation into manifestation.  By balancing, healing, honouring and integrating our Divine Feminine and Masculine energies, we write a new future for ourselves.

This is where kundalini energy comes into play. By awakening this empowering energy and supporting its upward rise, it will facilitate this reunion – where your individuated self is welcomed back into the arms of the You that has never been separate from the divine.

Along with the breath work that you began to incorporate in Lesson #2, cultivating a practice of self-referencing will assist in liberating your kundalini energy, creating wholeness instead of dissipating energy. The following meditative practice is designed to gracefully support you in turning toward and tuning in to yourself. It will help you to direct your awareness into the present moment, by way of your heart, where you’ll become increasingly sensitised to how life is moving through you, and attuned to the dance of consciousness that is uniquely your own.

As you move through this course as a whole, you’ll become increasingly clear about how you receive, filter, accept, reject, integrate, or transform all that comes to you. You’ll see the dance of masculine and feminine energies within you in a new light.

And why is this important? What will you “get” from this expanded awareness and understanding?

You can claim the spiritual knowing that is your destiny.

Practice Of the Heart

How to use your consciousness to discover your own rhythm – your true heart.

As the foundation of all our practices and our way of being, the Heart Practice helps us to shift identification away from, and to transcend the limited mind towards the infinite ocean of being that can be accessed very simply and directly through the spiritual heart centre. The heart centre should not be confused with the physical heart or the mind and its emotions. Through the Heart Practice we come to know and experience a steady state of being, the infinite ocean of consciousness – and awaken our kundalini energy. When we make the Heart Practice the foundation of all we do and all we are, the result is inevitable.

Daily Heart Practice

This practice offers a way to begin to listen to your inner world – your personal universe with its own rhythm and flow. Although the mind might have a goal or an expectation, there really isn’t an outcome that needs to be reached, just a tuning in and discovery.

In this stopping, by sitting and breathing without any outer expectation or goal, another world opens inside of you. Just watch and see, feel, explore, listen. Silence is a great Teacher.

Find a comfortable place to sit down, breathe, and begin to relax. Allow yourself to get quiet and still. And begin to notice the energy moving inside of you, without your having to do anything to make it happen.

Kundalini moves like a river in your body, flowing up and down your spine, touching the physical body and the subtle body. Using your breath to tune into your kundalini energy and to notice the qualities of its movement – its pulsating, flowing, and quickening movement – allow it to take you on a journey to your heart.

Moving intentionally toward your heart on this stream of feminine energy, what do you find once you get there? Notice the rhythm and pulsation of your inner energy, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes smooth, sometimes fluctuating. Feel the rhythm as it reverberates outward, affecting every part of your body. Are there any sensations that accompany your inner rhythm? Do you feel any heat, tingling, coolness, lightness, weight?

Now, hold your hand to your heart, physically making contact with your chest. Breathe into this space. Notice how, instantly, all of your energy comes to meet you here at this connection point in your center.

You may feel a sense of spaciousness begin to open up. You may feel a sense of relief that takes place as your heart is being acknowledged.

As your heart is seen and acknowledged, so are you. Breathing in again, notice how this feels.

Feeling again into the rhythm of your energy, what does your heart whisper to you? What does it want you to know right now? What images, sensations, or words show up? The heart is the translator between your mind, body and spirit; serving as a conduit. What is the message that it’s translating to you now?

And then breathe again. Relax into this space, with nothing more to do. Thank your heart for conveying its golden wisdom, and let it know that you’ll be turning to it more often, especially when you’re looking for the deepest truth. 🙏
